An investment in the future
Lewell expects flexibility and reliability at their new automated warehouse

Press Release - SUPPLY CHAIN AUTOMATION

BORGHOLZHAUSEN/ LICHTENFELS, April 2011 - One storage and retrieval machine smoothly glides and shines on the new green and orange rails. It safely carries a load of sensitive corrugated paper to its place in the storage racks. “About 1,000 pallets leave our facility per day. Consequently, we rely on a precise material flow,” explains Lewell Managing Director, Bernhard Lemmink. The Bavarian packaging company depends on reliability, flexibility and durability. Westfalia supports them with an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) and Savanna.NET® Warehouse Management Software (WMS). The new automated warehouse in Lichtenfels stores 7,500 pallets of raw materials and finished goods. The logistics experts from Borgholzhausen met the challenge of handling what is a very difficult material. “Corrugated paper is a sensitive product which has to be carried carefully,” states Westfalia project manager Willi Giesbrecht. Through gentle material handling Westfalia contributes to the safe and optimal production of quality premium packaging.
Of central importance to this precise material production flow, is Westfalia’s Savanna.NET® Warehouse Management Software. “Lichtenfels is a complex facility as it combines a rack, an automated warehouse and block storage”, clarifies the 37-year-old engineer. In order to guarantee the smooth material flow Savanna.NET software keeps an eye on the route planning and acts as the central interface between the ERP system and the equipment’s PLCs. The entire operation focuses on meeting Lewell’s customers’ orders in an optimal material flow. Just as Westfalia has designed the system to meet Lewell’s, specific needs. The facility has just gone into operation.
