Press release - Supply Chain Automation

Optimum packaging and prompt delivery of different meat
products

Borgholzhausen, 26 March 2007 – Customers want more and more variety – particularly when it comes to food. Manufacturers are responding to this trend with shorter product cycles and a wider range of products. In Germany there are over 1500 different types of sausage. How can manufacturers cope with the growing complexity of customer requirements with efficient logistics?

Logistical solutions for more complex problems

Many solutions are costly – especially for fresh produce: increasing shifts, recruiting new staff or acquiring more space for cooling. With the Miniload Compact System, Westfalia Storage Systems is offering an intelligent alternative that is cost-efficient even in the long term. This modern logistics system makes optimum usage of existing space and staffing capacities. This is a great help, particularly when picking small parts from among a wide range of items ─ an ideal solution for the meat and foodstuffs industry. Frank Wüstenfeld, expert for container logistics at Westfalia, cites an example: "At Bedford Fleischwaren our Miniload Compact System is used to store 20,000 containers over an area of 380 square metres. Here conventional systems require 640 square metres with the same ceiling height." Satisfied customers testify to the success of Westfalia technology: by using single-stage picking we managed to reduce two-shift-production to a single shift – and boosting throughput at the same time", comments Jürgen Benner, plant manager at Bedford Fleischwaren GmbH.
