Paper and printing industry dogged by cost pressures
The paper and printing industry are subject to high cost pressure, which burdens the profitability of businesses in this sector. The ever increasing costs of raw materials and energy is a source of major concern. At the same time, there has been no let-up in volume growth.
A challenge, especially for logistics – innovative automation solutions from Westfalia
- cost-efficient, as more goods can be stored in less space
- flexible, as automatic operation in 3 shifts is possible
- improved quality, due to careful goods handling
Practical example: Frankfurter Societäts-Druckerei – Mörfelden
Each week the printing company Frankfurter Societäts-Druckerei with production sites at Mörfelden and Maisach requires 800 or 1,600 tonnes of paper to print the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) newspaper. To increase production targets in it was necessary to optimise storage in existing, albeit cramped premises.
Day storage gets "FAZ rolling off the presses"
Westfalia solved the problem by providing a single-bay storage facility at each production site for the temporary storage of the roles ready for printing. By developing a special 5-axle storage and retrieval vehicle, it achieved the required flexibility and performance, whilst continuing to guarantee careful handling of the heavy rolls. The principle of random storage combined with storage and retrieval vehicles provides reliable just-in-time access to the rolls of paper in store more...
