Press release - Supply Chain Automation

Small is beautiful – Westfalia customers have great success with small-scale logistics systems such as MiniLoad and Savanna.NET®

Borgholzhausen, 18 July 2007 – The saying "Small is beautiful" was written by economic history. The idea of achieving great things with small-scale solutions also applies to Intralogistics: Automated small parts warehouses can cope with a wide variety of products in logistical terms. Individual modules of the Savanna.NET® software control large logistics systems and grow along with the company thanks to upgrades. Both systems are the focus of attention at Westfalia's exhibition stand at LogIntern in Nuremberg.

When it comes to Westfalia MiniLoad systems

Westfalia has successfully automated supply chains for many different branches and their load units for over 35 years. The company has consistently applied this expertise to its MiniLoad systems. MiniLoads are particularly effective when handling small parts in special load carriers (e.g., standard containers, trays, crates). They are suitable for use as buffer storage in production logistics and as order-picking warehouses in distribution logistics. To boost picking performance Westfalia incorporates picking zones directly in the automated small parts warehouse (tunnel order picking). Ralf Köhne, Westfalia Sales Manager for Storage Systems: "Our MiniLoads are especially efficient for companies with articles in small packaging units and high throughputs. Customers such as the shipping company Lürssen, the mechanical engineering firm Polar Mohr, the pharmaceutical business Egomedical or the solar power manufacturer SMA already use Westfalia MiniLoads with success."

The modular logistics software Savanna.NET®

The Savanna.NET® software supports automation of many different logistics systems. It can easily be interfaced with higher-level enterprise resource planning systems (ERPs) such as SAP and is designed to incorporate hardware components such as pick-by-voice, RFID or radio scanners. Certification by Microsoft, SAP, HP and the Fraunhofer-Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) in Dortmund confirms the quality of the product and demonstrates the possible synergies of the software. Andreas Ulisch, Managing Director for Logistics Software at Westfalia: "Our modular Savanna.NET® software offers expanding businesses individual support. The flexible modules combine the benefits of individual and standard design. If the company's requirements grow, modules can be used to extend the executable system. According to the idea "Think big, start small". Bucking the trend "Never change a running system", the principle here is "Upgrade your business". Westfalia customers such as the truck manufacturer IVECO and the solar power company SMA are already working successfully with Savanna.NET®".
