Borgholzhausen, April 29, 2026 – With the acquisition of the final 9 hectares at Am Teuto 1 in the Borgholzhausen-Versmold Intermunicipal Industrial Park in 2020, Westfalia Technologies secured more space for development and a logistical location advantage directly on the A33. From the company’s perspective, today – with 2026 marking the logistics specialist’s 55th anniversary and exactly 1,111 days after the official move from Industriestraße to the IBV—many goals have been achieved.
“We have consistently tailored the new location to our customers and our shared project success through flexible facilities,” says CEO Andreas Gartemann. In his view, this represents “an important and timely strategic realignment, despite drastic developments such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and ongoing uncertainty in global markets.” The Borgholzhausen-based technology company is also feeling the effects. For example, project delays and postponed investments are the order of the day. “Added to this are significant cost increases in nearly all areas. Overall, this creates planning uncertainty and forces management and staff to find pragmatic and flexible solutions.”
But Gartemann believes this is going well: “Westfalia is growing against the general trend and is seeing sustained high demand, primarily from its long-standing existing customers. As a result, revenue has nearly doubled over the past five years to around 75 million euros. Our company generates nearly 70% of this revenue from existing customers.”
The number of storage and retrieval machines delivered in 2025 has nearly doubled compared to the previous year. “We deliver on time despite growing order volumes and ensure the quality of our warehouse components through our expanded test facility.” The new facility, 400 meters long, is designed to accommodate storage and retrieval machines up to 50 meters high. These are assembled horizontally and - depending on their size - hoisted onto trailers using overhead cranes. A new, dedicated exit eliminates the need to close intersections. The facility is just a few hundred meters from the highway.
The modularity of the smallest, compact single-mast storage and retrieval machines (SRM), in turn, reduces the need for heavy-haul transport. These SRM can be easily integrated into existing buildings with lower floor loads. Andreas Gartemann: “This allows us to efficiently automate even smaller companies today, or modernize them precisely where needed, and replace existing equipment to increase warehouse performance.”
New possibilities in manufacturing
“New manufacturing systems such as the CMA tube and profile processing system and a welding robot increase manufacturing efficiency and ensure the quality of our products,” explains Sebastian Bursy, Head of Production & Lean Management, regarding the consistent expansion of manufacturing.
The collaborative robot, or cobot, reliably performs welding tasks to ensure high-quality welds while employees can work nearby: “Close collaboration between humans and machines creates a modern, efficient manufacturing environment,” says Bursy. The new production hall also contributes to this: “Thanks to the additional space and the production processes structured on this basis, we are increasing productivity and output.”
A corresponding, high-performance warehouse management system has also been established at the new headquarters. Sebastian Bursy: “By consolidating service and the on-site manufacturing of all SRM and conveyor systems, we keep around 1,000 individual components in stock daily in our own warehouse.”
Sustainable reduction of CO2 emissions
Sustainability is the second main objective of the new complex, which was built to be energy-efficient in accordance with the guidelines of the federal program “Bundesförderung für effiziente Gebäude” (BEG) program and equipped with air-source heat pump heating and 1,400 photovoltaic modules covering 2,800 m2 of roof space.
According to Gartemann, this calculation has also paid off: “In 2025, we generated 644,410 kWh of electricity, covering one-third of our total production consumption, and were able to save approximately 376 tons of CO2.” Since the introduction of one of its key technologies, Westfalia systems have been designed for maximum storage density, storage capacity, and reliability - and thus for ecological and economic sustainability. “Our Satellite® technology makes it possible to consolidate storage locations in a minimal footprint and reduce operating costs. The fact that we now produce key components in a more climate-friendly manner further enhances sustainability.”
The most unusual innovation will soon be given a “face” in the lobby: a dedicated reception robot, supplied by TERRA Robotics. Through the WORTMANN subsidiary, Westfalia - as part of the WORTMANN Group - will in the future offer AI-supported robotics for industrial environments. Cleaning robots have also been making their rounds in administration and production since 2026.
The expanded product and service portfolio is the answer to growing demand: In the future, AMRs, quadrupeds, and humanoids will take on logistical tasks such as order picking for Westfalia customers, with seamless interfaces to existing systems and data securely hosted in Germany. Andreas Gartemann: “We are embracing Industry 5.0, which places human-machine collaboration, sustainability, and resilience at the center. This offers great opportunities for everyone who embraces this dynamic.”
Data sovereignty in Germany
The robots we use are based on industrial platforms from leading international manufacturers. We handle all aspects of system integration, control, software architecture, and data management here in Germany, hosted on German servers - the Terra Cloud. The robots do not act as the primary system controllers; rather, they are integrated into a closed system architecture that we provide.
From forestry conveyor systems to turnkey automated warehouse systems
Over the course of 55 years, Westfalia Technologies has paved its way to becoming a full-service technology provider and general contractor for turnkey automated warehouse systems. On February 18, 1971, Ulrich Upmeyer of Borgholzhausen founded WFT Systemtechnik - at the time with a focus on agriculture and forestry. In the beginning, just 20 to 30 employees worked exclusively on conveyor systems. They primarily transported wood. Today, Westfalia Technologies has around 300 employees across Europe and 500 worldwide, including its U.S. sister company, Westfalia Technologies, Inc., in York, Pennsylvania.
More than 500 customers worldwide now rely on Westfalia storage systems. These continue to open up new markets. Sometimes they also come full circle: With an in-house storage system that went into operation in 2025, the Austrian wood specialist THEURL has doubled its capacity and now serves its sawn timber production on a just-in-sequence basis.
